Next I took the eraser and adjusted the opacity in order to erase the details while zooming into the picture to see the details of the hair. I pulled the eraser away from the hair. When I was done erasing the background I added a drop shadow in the back and used Gaussian blur in order to soften up the drop shadow.
Then I created a path in order to turn the line around the person into marching ants. Then I hit ctrl+alt+I to invert the path and hit delete to delete the background.
In order to extract the person from the background I first used the pen tool to draw around the person.
